Sclerotherapy

If you would like to improve the look of your legs by getting rid of visible spider veins, please take the time to read about Sclerotherapy Treatment at our clinic. It is the Gold Standard for eliminating spider veins. It is relatively painless and can be performed on an outpatient basis. It is cheaper than lasers, and leaves no scars.  A concentrated saline or specially developed chemical solution is injected into the spider vein with a microfine needle.

Sima Clinic Sclerotherapy Procedure

The solution washes over the tiny cells which line the inner wall of the blood vessel, dries them out, and causes them to shrink. Within a week or two, the blood vessels disappear by a natural cleaning of the body. The work of carrying the blood is shifted to other healthy blood vessels nearby, consequently improving circulations.

Sclerotherapy is very effective spider vein treatment. 10 to 40 veins may be treated in one session. When spider veins are interconnected, injection into one site may fade the entire network; otherwise, individual injections are necessary. Sometimes several sessions are needed to clear the veins satisfactorily.

What about Laser treatments?

Sclerotherapy is far less painful, more effective, and has fewer side effects than laser treatment of spider veins. Lasers are also much more likely to cause scarring, and are considerably more expensive! Successful results are very technique dependent and needs to be done often by the performing physician. Sima's expertise in performing Sclerotherapy on spider veins of the legs has led her to improve the results by using microfine needles and light magnification if necessary. Consequently, she is extraordinarily accurate at delivering the solution into the vein. In consideration for patient comfort and to minimize the discomfort, we add anesthetic into our solutions, making our clinic's Sclerotherapy a very well tolerated procedure. The vast majority of patients having this procedure are highly satisfied with their results.

How long do the results last?

The veins that resolve with Sclerotherapy are gone forever; some people never have trouble with their veins again. However one treatment may not be sufficient for complete removal.

What exactly are spider veins?

Spider veins are formed by the dilation of a small group of blood vessels located close to the surface of the skin. Although they can appear anywhere on the body, spider veins are most commonly found on the face and legs. They usually pose no health hazard but may produce a dull aching in the legs after prolonged standing.

Who develops spider and varicose veins?

More than 20 percent of women have some form of varicose condition. The exact cause of spider and varicose veins is unknown, although heredity, pregnancy and hormonal changes are believed to be factors contributing to both conditions. Four times more women than men have varicose veins.

Can Sclerotherapy prevent spider veins?

Although Sclerotherapy works for existing spider veins, it does not prevent new ones from developing. Wearing medical grade compression hose can prevent spider veins.

What happens after the treatment?

We recommend walking but avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours. No hot tubs / baths for 3 days. Medical grade compression hose (available at the clinic) worn for 3 days around the clock, followed by three weeks during the day, is recommended since it increases the effectiveness of Sclerotherapy. The treated blood vessels disappear over a period of one to two weeks.

Are there any side effects following treatment?

I have never had any significant side effects occur. Patients return to their normal activities immediately. Possible side effects are minimal and usually transient. Temporary reactions can include a slight swelling of the leg or foot, minor bruising and itching.

Is treatment always necessary?

No. Although varicose veins can cause medical problems if left untreated, the majority of varicose and spider veins are treated for cosmetic improvement. If you are uncertain about your particular case, a consultation should answer the question.

Does Sclerotherapy hurt?

Most people report little if any discomfort. Occasionally, mild burning may be felt at the injection site that resolves after a few minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies according to the severity and the number of veins that need to be treated. Although most people will notice some improvement after the first treatment, most areas will need to be treated approximately three times for optimal results.

How long does a treatment take?

Your initial visit consisting of a consultation and Sclerotherapy, if indicated, will take approximately 30 minutes. Subsequent visits for Sclerotherapy treatment or follow-up will take 15-30 minutes.

What are the side effects of Sclerotherapy?

Bruising at the injection sites is normal following treatment and resolves in 7-10 days. Slight hyperpigmentation (staining) of the skin or telangiectatic matting (tiny new veins) can occur but is usually temporary. Complications such as ulceration or allergies to the sclerosant are extremely rare. Sclerotherapy is a very safe treatment.

How long will the results last?

Since varicose and spider veins are a chronic condition, new veins will likely appear over time. Most people can remain "vein free" by returning for touch-up visits every couple of years.

How can I prevent varicose and spider veins?

Unfortunately if you have a hereditary predisposition, you will likely develop varicose and spider veins. The good news is that by understanding the roles of diet, exercise, support stockings, hormones and pregnancy, you can minimize your risk and control the progression.

"I cannot agree more with the other reviewers. Sima is wonderful and her clinic is a lovely place. I had Sclerotherapy (spider veins) with Sima and she could not have been more caring. She explained everything to me, made sure I understood what was to come and what to expect after wards. The procedure was easygoing and I was even able to watch as several disappeared immediately! It felt like visiting a friend and not a medical office. I cannot recommend them highly enough!"
